Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 5-28, 2019
6-8 p.m.
Course fee: $390
This course is led by Spencer Edgerton, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and has been crafting metal art for 30 years. He’s a regular exhibitor at Burning Man and the Renaissance brain behind Ei-Robot, based at his launchpad in Tucson.
Students meet twice a week for four weeks with Spencer Edgerton to learn the basics of green sand mold casting to create small cast pieces such as jewelry or knife parts, or parts for any art project that demands a custom-cast piece made in a micro-scale foundry. Students first learn how to build the tools involved in this cope-and-drag style of casting, then use them to bring their unique creation to life.
Students first learn some of the history behind metal casting before getting into benchtop casting techniques, including:
• Direct pouring into cuttlebone molds: Fast way to get results and great for jewelry
• Sand-casting with a cope and drag: Reusable system, perfect for double-sided parts
• Model-making for lost-wax casting: Hand-build waxes for direct burnout
• Centrifugal casting: Ideal way to create more complicated forms
• Introduction to model-making using 3D printing
• Foundry tour: Introduction to casting larger-scale objects
