Tatara Workshop

Make Your Own Steel the Ancient Japanese Way

Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019
8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Course fee: $450

Students will work with Clayton Cowart from Sugarloaf Knife Works to set up and operate a modern tatara like those used by swordsmiths in Japan to obtain high-grade tamahagane from black sand.

This course will cover the basic theory of furnace construction and metallurgy involved to create the highly valued jewel steel. Students will learn how to identify and separate the different grades of tamahagane produced.

This is a hands-on course and students will feed the tatara, tap the slag and pull the bloom.  Students will also be taking home a piece of their handmade tamagagane  at the end of the workshop!

Full course details and important information about clothing, safety, hydration etc. will be sent to students two weeks before the course.
